Bling Bling!

How important are the wedding rings in a marriage? Do you need to have Bling Bling in your diamond ring? Or are you okay with plain wedding bands or a family heirloom. Are you a stickler when it comes to the 4 C’s of Diamonds? Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat weight – in that order! The selection of a ring can represent success, status, wealth, and style. Let us not forget the expectation is that a man should spend 2 – 3 months salary on the engagement ring. Today, women are buying rings for men and getting down on one knee and proposing.

When I got married 14 years ago, I was so happy with my yellow gold Marquise diamond engagement ring and two baguette bands: and my husband’s matching band. Then six years later, I swapped my bridal set for a gleaming anniversary band that I receive compliments on all the time. Like, “Did you design that yourself?” Or “Oh my gosh your ring is beautiful?” The sixth wedding anniversary gift is not a ring or a diamond, but I wanted something different, and I feel like it was worth it. Was I wrong? Do we have to wear our original wedding rings and bands forever? This year we are coming up on our 14th anniversary, and I want us both to get new rings. According to The Knot, the fourteenth wedding anniversary gifts are Ivory, Opal and Gold. Okay, so that means we can get new Gold Diamond Rings.

For the past two weeks, I have spent hours binging on the Netflix series called Explained. Season 2, Episode 10 titled Diamonds, provided a wealth of information about the discovery of diamonds. The history of the DeBeers Jewellers and how they dominated the diamond industry with their memorable slogan A Diamond is forever and who can forget movie star Marilyn Monroe singing “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend" I agree. The episode also highlighted hip hop artists who wear and rap about their expensive diamonds from Jacob Arabo aka Jacob the Jeweler. Please visit Jacob’s website because he has jewelry to die for. In case anyone wants to purchase a gift for my birthday, I absolutely love the Zodiac Collection, specifically the Scorpion String Necklace.

I wonder if men are still holding on to the traditions of saving up thousands of dollars to purchase an engagement ring, and to go and ask his bride-to-be’s father for her hand in marriage. Or have the Millennials changed the game in marriage proposal and bling forever? There is an extensive selection of affordable wedding jewelry today with more versatile forms of payment. We are living in uncertain financial times, and I would hope that people are shopping for wedding rings wisely. But if you can splurge take advantage of the fabulous variety of diamonds and gemstones available. Bling Bling!
